A Bombe called “Auckland”
My colleague Bob Doran has recently returned from a trip to England where he visited Bletchley Park. He writes: I finally got to visit the displays at Bletchley Park. The biggest thrill was seeing the bombe replica in operation. Here it is being explained to a tour group:
Actually, it wasn’t working correctly but you could still get some idea of the noise that it made:
But the biggest surprise was learning that there was a bombe named Auckland. This is described with the text:
They had the actual sign for the Dunedin machine (this has been digitally enhanced):
All in all, an interesting experience to recommend.
I remember the Tuesday your friend came to visit and had a most interesting talk with him over the names of the Bombe. As you have said, the bombe on the day of his visit was not working correctly but we are happy to say that it now is (i am the guy in the green shirt in the first photo btw
ReplyDeleteHi (guy in green shirt),
DeleteI visited Bletchley last year and had a fascinating time. Bob who wrote this post, and I have a keen interest in the history of computing. Bob does an excellent job of running our departments computing history displays http://goo.gl/crLDM and I've just published a book about the history and future of computing (info about on this blog). I'm trying to get the book into the gift shop at Bletchley, but no luck so far - any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for sharing with us and i hope in future you also update us.
