The Lyons Electronic Office (LEO) is 60 years today. Commissioned by
J. Lyons &Co., the once famous UK company that ran a nationwide chain of tea shops, LEO was first used in 1951 to calculate how much it cost to bake and distribute cakes. This was the first commercial use of a computer. The
American Airlines ticketing system, which became SABRE, didn't go live until 1960. In fact in 1956, Lyons started doing payroll calculations for
Ford UK using LEO's spare capacity; so they also invented IT outsourcing.
